Major Dinesh Raghu Raman Remembered on 19th Death Anniversary

Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir: Major Dinesh Raghu Raman of 19 Jat and 34 Rashtriya Rifles, a recipient of the Ashoka Chakra (Posthumous), is remembered on October 2 for his actions during an encounter with terrorists in Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir, in 2007.

On October 2, 2007, Major Raman deployed his company in a village in Baramulla district where an encounter with terrorists was already underway. At around 8:55 am, while his troops were closing in on suspected houses, he heard calls for help from a fellow officer who had been seriously injured.

Despite heavy hostile fire, Major Raman crawled towards the injured officer and brought him and two other wounded soldiers to safety.

He then engaged two terrorists responsible for heavy casualties among the troops. In a close-quarter battle, Major Raman killed both terrorists.

The engagement continued as other terrorists opened fire on him from another house. Major Raman was seriously injured during the ensuing firefight but continued to lead and motivate his troops. Despite his injuries, he remained engaged in the operation and helped keep the terrorists pinned down until he lost consciousness.

Major Raman later succumbed to his injuries.

For his exceptional courage, leadership and selfless actions under enemy fire, Major Dinesh Raghu Raman was awarded the Ashoka Chakra posthumously, India's highest peacetime gallantry award.

His actions during the Baramulla operation are remembered for the lives he helped save and his determination to continue leading his men despite sustaining serious injuries.
