Major Vijit Kumar Singh, Shaurya Chakra (Posthumous), 17 Para Field Regiment, is remembered on 4 October for his courage and supreme sacrifice while fighting insurgents along the Assam–Manipur border in 2001.
On 4 October 2001, Major Vijit Kumar Singh was serving as the leading scout of a patrol conducting a search-and-destroy operation against a group of NSCN(IM) cadres along the Assam–Manipur border.
As the patrol approached a village, it came under an ambush. Displaying exceptional courage and composure under fire, Major Singh immediately retaliated and charged towards the militants.
During the counter-ambush assault, he killed one militant and injured two others, forcing them to abandon their positions.
The action continued, and one of the injured militants was about to fire at a fellow soldier. Major Singh immediately charged towards the militant, drawing the fire towards himself. Though fatally wounded, he continued fighting and killed the militant who posed a threat to his comrade.
Major Vijit Kumar Singh ultimately made the supreme sacrifice on 4 October 2001, at the age of 26.
For his conspicuous gallantry, courage and selfless devotion to his men, Major Vijit Kumar Singh was awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously.
