Captain Jha, who served with the Army Ordnance Corps and 7 JAT, was a Ghatak platoon commander during Operation Rakshak and Operation Parakram. Under his leadership, the platoon took part in eight operations and eliminated 27 terrorists. He consistently led his men from the front.

The Final Operation

On the night of 2/3 October 2002, Captain Jha was leading an ambush along the Line of Control when he observed a group of terrorists attempting to infiltrate through a nala.

Holding his fire until the group came within close range, he initiated the ambush and killed one terrorist instantly.

Two other terrorists managed to move away through the folds and undergrowth of the nala and opened fire on him. Despite the intense hostile fire and the danger to his own life, Captain Jha moved forward to engage them.

In a fierce close-quarter encounter, he killed both remaining terrorists before making the supreme sacrifice.

Captain Dilip Kumar Jha displayed extraordinary courage, exemplary initiative and outstanding leadership in the face of grave danger. His actions reflected his determination to protect his men and prevent the infiltration of terrorists across the Line of Control.

For his gallantry, courage and selfless service, Captain Dilip Kumar Jha was awarded the Kirti Chakra (Posthumous).
