
Captain Shashikant Sharma of 12 JAK LI made the supreme sacrifice defending Bana Post in Siachen on 5 October 1998. He was awarded the Sena Medal posthumously.

Despite sustaining grievous injuries under Pakistani fire, Captain Sharma continued to direct his team’s fire and defend Bana Post.
Defending Bana Post
In October 1998, Captain Sharma was deployed on the Saltoro Ridge, approximately 20 kilometres south-west of the Siachen Glacier.
According to the supplied account, Pakistani forces subjected Bana Post, situated at an altitude of over 21,000 feet, to heavy shelling on the night of 3 October 1998.
Captain Sharma and his team responded with a counter-attack. During the engagement, he sustained grievous wounds to his right thigh and abdomen.
Leadership Despite His Injuries
Captain Sharma continued to direct fire and guard the post despite his wounds.
In the early hours of 5 October, he was struck in the forehead and severely injured. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries, making the supreme sacrifice while defending the post.
He was awarded the Sena Medal posthumously in recognition of his courage and devotion to duty.
