Remembering Major Bhupinder Singh, Maha Vir Chakra

Major Bhupinder Singh, Maha Vir Chakra, is remembered for his courage and leadership during the Indo-Pak War of 1965. Serving with 4 Horse (Hodson’s Horse), he led his tank squadron in successful operations during some of the fiercest battles of the war.

A Tank Commander Who Led from the Front

Major Bhupinder Singh was serving with 4 Horse (Hodson’s Horse) during the 1965 Indo-Pak War. Between 11 and 19 September 1965, he led his tank squadron in a series of successful engagements against Pakistani forces.

As a squadron commander, Major Singh demonstrated determination and leadership while directing his tanks in combat. His actions contributed to the regiment's battlefield successes during the operations.

During the fighting, Major Bhupinder Singh was wounded in action. Despite his injuries, he remained associated with the intense combat operations of the period.

He was subsequently evacuated to Delhi for treatment but succumbed to his injuries on 3 October 1965.

For his gallantry and leadership during the 1965 war, Major Bhupinder Singh was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, one of India's highest military decorations for acts of exceptional courage in the presence of the enemy.
